The artist and writer Matthew Collings reviews David Bowie's private art collection. Works the late singer quietly collected over the years to go on display before being auctioned at Sotheby’s The musician's life as a collector was something he kept almost entirely hidden from public view. But now, nearly 300 works by artists including Damien Hirst, Henry Moore and Marcel Duchamp will go on display at Sotheby's in London, before being sold at auction in November. The paintings are collectively expected to fetch more than £10m. "David Bowie's collection offers a unique insight into the personal world of one of the 20th Century's greatest creative spirits," said Oliver Barker, chairman of Sotheby's Europe. The "Bowie/Collector" three-part sale in November will feature around 400 items from the pop icon's private collection and is seen fetching "in excess of 10 million pounds" ($13.24 million), a spokeswoman for the auction house said. Bowie, who died aged 69 in January, straddled the worlds of music, fashion, drama and art for five decades, and was known for some of the most innovative songs of his generation. However his art collector side "was something he kept almost entirely hidden from public view", Sotheby's said. "Eclectic, unscripted, understated: David Bowie's collection offers a unique insight into the personal world of one of the 20th century's greatest creative spirits," Oliver Barker, Sotheby's Europe chairman, said in a statement. Among works to be featured is late American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat's "Air Power" painting, estimated between 2.5 million and 3.5 million pounds, and Hirst's kaleidoscopic "Beautiful, Shattering, Slashing, Violent, Pinky, Hacking, Sphincter Painting", seen fetching 250,000–350,000 pounds. There are also sculptures and design furniture, including a 1960s record player by Italian brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. The collection is particularly rich in 20th-century British art, including two brilliantly coloured “spin” paintings by Hirst, and works by Frank Auerbach, Stanley Spencer, Patrick Caulfield, Peter Lanyon, and Graham Sutherland. He once said of Auerbach’s densely worked, almost sculptural paintings: “My God, yeah. I want to sound like that looks.” He lent – anonymously – a key work, a portrait of Auerbach’s cousin Gerda, to the major retrospective on the artist in 2001. It will also include Air Power, a major graffiti painting by the American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, which alone is estimated by Sotheby’s to be worth up to £3.5m. The furniture includes pieces by the influential design collective Memphis Milano. A spokesman for Bowie’s estate said: “David’s art collection was fuelled by personal interest and compiled out of passion. He always sought and encouraged loans from the collection and enjoyed sharing the works in his custody. “Though his family are keeping certain pieces of particular personal significance, it is now time to give others the opportunity to appreciate – and acquire – the art and objects he so admired.”

The Lennoxlove Amen glass, made in the 1750s and engraved with two verses of the Jacobite anthem, went under the hammer on the opening day of an auction of an important single owner collection of antiques and fine art. Bidding quickly eclipsed the pre-sale estimate of £20,000 to £30,000 and Halls' fine art director Jeremy Lamond's hammer fell at £43,000 to a telephone bidder from London. The auction, which realised £265,000 on the first day, followed on day two with oak, country and fine furniture, alms dishes and metalware, tapestries, clocks and mirrors. The collection belonged to the late Edward V. Phillips, a corn merchant who retired with his wife from the Cotswolds to the Powys-Shropshire border, near Knighton. He began collecting in the 1970s, selecting only the best pieces for his collection. The 'Amen' glass was one of a number of glasses in the auction that celebrated the movement that plotted against the protestant kings of the 17th and 18th centuries. These glasses were passed around in secret societies devoted to the restoration of a Catholic monarch. "These glasses are testament to the fact that this was perhaps one of the few times in the history of alcohol when the glass was more dangerous to the imbiber than its contents," explained Mr Lamond. "For those caught with such articles, penalties were severe, including imprisonment and, sometimes, execution. "The secret Jacobite toast, however, continued to be honoured throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and the emblems of Jacobitism, the rose and buds, Jacobs ladder, images of Charles Edward himself, adorned Mr Phillips's glassware. "Rarest of all Jacobite glasses are the 'Amen' group of wine glasses. Mr Phillips was lucky enough to own the 'Baird of Lennoxlove' Amen glass." From an early age she showed a flair for drawing and painting and now has 30 years experience as an artist and traveled extensively, living in New Zealand, Norfolk Island, England, Finland, Holland and Germany using these and other countries as a base to travel and to collect information for paintings. In recent times Carole has traveled extensively in the United States and in South America creating a new look for her works. In 2003 she returned to New York to participate in the Art Expo with Oz Arts. A solid grounding in realist art has permitted Carole Foster to explore and teach a more contemporary approach to her subject while still being able to experiment. Subsequently, she has developed a modern abstract impressionist style. Her modern abstract approach guarantees her the liberty to grapple with the heavy demands of creating high energy vibrant pieces and equally capturing the visually silent atmospheres in works of a quiet nature. Many of the colour gradations Carole Foster achieves are for maximum emotional and optical impact and it is the fact that they approach unusual colour application that adds a unique quality to the work. Sometimes Carole Foster 's work is gestural and impressionistic and often romantic in quality. She does not restrict herself to landscapes, but for the most she draws inspiration from the Australian outback. The arid zones, which Carole has experienced first hand during many 4-wheel drive excursions and through hiring small planes for fly-overs, evoke the most emotion in her work. Carole Foster now lives in Dromana Victoria where her studio is. She currently teachers artists to there final goal and is a part time curator/artistic director with a large gallery. Over the last 32 years Carole has had over 29 Solo Exhibitions. She has worked with Qantas Exhibitions that were throughout the Qantas club lounges around Australia.
