In addition to serving as source material for the artist, the collections provide Gates with insight into how one person or institution sees the world. “It's like this little time capsule of things that were important to someone,” he says. The majority of the collections come from his immediate surroundings on Chicago’s South Side. “How do you catalog the everyday, especially as the phenomena of the everyday is changing?” Gates asks, “And is this another way of tracking Black space?” The materials function as an archive when shown in their original state, or they can be amal...

Produced by Eric Minh Swenson. The art world's rather loose use of terminology is enough to make any respectable philosopher cringe, e.g. the distinction between modern and contemporary art. Moreover, there are so many stereotypes, romanticized ideas and loaded concepts about the nature of art and its creation that art professionals can barely communicate clearly with each other, let alone give the lay person a leg up toward an understanding. It is beyond the scope of this exhibition to provide any broad solutions to this dilemma, but this show does make the point that neither modern nor contemporary art is or ever was fundamentally or universally anti-classical, and that's a start toward more clarity. This curatorial premise is clearly demonstrated across a range of more than a cen...

Episode #247: From his Chicago studio, Theaster Gates reflects on the various collections he has acquired and created artworks with, including the Jet magazine archives and the inventory of an entire hardware store. In addition to serving as source material for the artist, the collections provide Gates with insight into how one person or institution sees the world. “It's like this little time capsule of things that were important to someone,” he says. The majority of the collections come from his immediate surroundings on Chicago’s South Side. “How do you catalog the everyday, especially as the phenomena of the everyday is changing?” Gates asks, “And is this another way of tracking Black space?” The materials function as an archive when shown in their original state, or they can be amalgamated and transformed into a painting or sculpture. “It's the thing, and it's the thing that makes the thing,” says the artist. Theaster Gates creates sculptures with clay, tar, and renovated buildings, transforming the raw material of urban neighborhoods into radically reimagined vessels of opportunity for the community. Establishing a virtuous circle between fine art and social progress, Gates strips dilapidated buildings of their components, transforming those elements into sculptures that act as bonds or investments, the proceeds of which are used to finance the rehabilitation of entire city blocks. Many of the artist’s works evoke his African-American identity and the broader struggle for civil rights, from sculptures incorporating fire hoses, to events organized around soul food, and choral performances by the experimental musical ensemble Black Monks of Mississippi, led by Gates himself. This curatorial premise is clearly demonstrated across a range of more than a century, with figurative works from Toulouse-Lautrec and early Picasso to David Hockney and Elizabeth Peyton. From an early age she showed a flair for drawing and painting and now has 30 years experience as an artist and traveled extensively, living in New Zealand, Norfolk Island, England, Finland, Holland and Germany using these and other countries as a base to travel and to collect information for paintings. In recent times Carole has traveled extensively in the United States and in South America creating a new look for her works. In 2003 she returned to New York to participate in the Art Expo with Oz Arts. A solid grounding in realist art has permitted Carole Foster to explore and teach a more contemporary approach to her subject while still being able to experiment. Subsequently, she has developed a modern abstract impressionist style. Her modern abstract approach guarantees her the liberty to grapple with the heavy demands of creating high energy vibrant pieces and equally capturing the visually silent atmospheres in works of a quiet nature. Many of the colour gradations Carole Foster achieves are for maximum emotional and optical impact and it is the fact that they approach unusual colour application that adds a unique quality to the work. Sometimes Carole Foster 's work is gestural and impressionistic and often romantic in quality. She does not restrict herself to landscapes, but for the most she draws inspiration from the Australian outback. The arid zones, which Carole has experienced first hand during many 4-wheel drive excursions and through hiring small planes for fly-overs, evoke the most emotion in her work. Carole Foster now lives in Dromana Victoria where her studio is. She currently teachers artists to there final goal and is a part time curator/artistic director with a large gallery. Over the last 32 years Carole has had over 29 Solo Exhibitions. She has worked with Qantas Exhibitions that were throughout the Qantas club lounges around Australia. She has also featured in Brighton Horizon Gallery, Brighton Melbourne, Manyung Gallery Mt. Eliza, First Settlement Gallery, Sorrento, Gullotti Galleries, Perth, Paintbox Fine Art, Canberra, Art Associated, Melbourne, Richmond Galleries, Richmond, The New York Art Expo, New York, Bark Modern, Hong Kong, Art n wine, Sanfrancisco, Post Office Gallery, Seymour, The Smoke House Gallery, Ballarat, Paint Box Fine Art, London. In December 2006 she was last commissioned to do 5 two metre tall paintings for a resturant in San Francisco. You can contact the artist about their art tips or art techniques directly via their website http://www.carolefosterart.com.au/ The Colour in your life fine art TV series is an art show that takes you into the everyday studios of artists from around the world. I often get asked about my favorite paper and what I use in my portfolio. The answer to both is Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta; I've been using it for years. For an 11x14 book, I purchase sheets of 11x17 then take them to a print shop to get scored and drilled. This allows the pages to work in a screw post portfolio and not be hidden behind sleeves (The paper is exceptionally durable). https://www.hahnemuehle.com/en/digital-fineart/digital-fineart-collection/glossy-fineart/p/Product/show/5/21.html
